The CSO welcomes the captivating Silver Garburg Piano Duo back to Christchurch on the 5th of August to perform Francis Poulenc’s effervescent and vivacious Concerto for Two Pianos. With performances in across five different continents in more than 50 countries, the pair are one of the the leading piano duos performing today.
French impressionist composer Maurice Ravel wrote La valse at the request of ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. The pair fell out and the ballet never eventuated, but Ravel’s cynical tribute to the waltz lives on.
Polish composer Witold Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by a newly reformed Warsaw Philharmonic after the devastation of the German occupation of Poland. It is considered one of the great works of the second half of the 20th century, reaching a dramatic climax.
Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt's Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten is a reflective piece written in reflection of his fellow compose for strings and a single bell.
