NZSO: Schumann & Barber
Make sure you’ve got a hanky at the ready for the NZSO: Schumann & Barber at the Isaac Theatre Royal on June 21; the programme features some of the most emotionally stirring music ever put to paper.
Joined by world-class German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott (and his 290-year-old cello, pictured) for Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor, the orchestra also takes on Brahms’ appropriately-named Tragic Overture and Samuel Barber’s renowned Adagio For Strings, a haunting, melancholy piece that has been played to mark the deaths of Princess Diana, JFK, and the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
Barber’s own Symphony No. 1 rounds out a concert of profound emotion that seems unlikely to leave a dry eye in the house. www.nzso.co.nz
