Court Theatre opens doors for Open Christchurch festival

The Open Christchurch team has seized the opportunity with this year’s festival of exceptional architecture to feature two buildings that embody the heritage and vitality of the city’s art spaces.

On Sunday 4 May, The Court Theatre throws open the doors to its new home in the Performing Arts Precinct Te Whare Tapere from 11am – 3pm, while precinct pioneer the Issac Theatre Royal does the same at 10am, 11am, noon and 1pm.

At The Court Theatre, ushers will be on hand to show you around and you can check out a behind-the-scenes display that explores the theatre’s five-decade history. Tours of the new Court Theatre with Athfield Architects are also free but bookings are essential.

And at the Isaac Theatre Royal, you can join staff on a 30-minute backstage tour of the lovingly restored architectural confection that won a Canterbury Architecture Award for Heritage in 2015.

This is the fifth iteration of Open Christchurch, held each year over the first weekend in May and curated by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City Making. It’s proved very popular, with thousands showing up to experience some of the city’s best buildings and special spaces for free.

This year, 51 buildings are on the programme, the largest number to date. Of these, 37 can be toured without a booking, with the curious invited to simply turn up on the day at their open times.

Jessica Halliday, Te Pūtahi’s director, reckons there’s inspo for everyone with what’s on offer. “Whether you're curious, creative, or community-minded, you’ll leave with a deeper connection to Ōtautahi’s past, present, and future. It’s your chance to explore, learn, and see the city in a new light.”

Another key part of the city’s post-quake recovery is included in the Open Christchurch programme. Te Kaha – affectionately known as The Pav due to its resemblance to the national dessert – is on track for its April 2026 opening. A lucky few decided by ballot will get a guided tour of the stadium building site. There’s plenty to see from the streetside though, so add in a walk-past as part of your weekend’s viewing.
