It will another great summer of art in Ōtautahi this year, with eight nationally and internationally renowned artists bringing works to the central city for SCAPE Public Art Season 2022.

Each artist’s work will showcase their unique interpretation of this year’s theme, Sweat Equity, a compelling conclusion to Managing Curator Jamie Hanton’s overall vision of Fictions, which has tied together SCAPE Public Art Seasons 2020-2022. The artists will be contributing both newly commissioned works and pre-existing works across different media, including digital moving image, sonic art, augmented reality and sculpture.

The Season 2022 artists are Hye Rim Lee, Wendelien Bakker, Scott Flanagan, Jon Jeet, Pacific Sisters, Eddie Clemens, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries and Dr Jo Burzynska. Hanton says of the line up: “I’ve chosen this diverse group of artists because their work reflects the many ways our bodies, minds, and hearts are impacted by, and respond to, the late capitalist environment of the 21st Century."

Korean artists Hye Rim Lee and Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries will be bringing the international perspective this year. Hye Rim Lee specialises in 3D animation and other forms of computer-generated imagery, including 3D prints. Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries are an art collective based in Seoul. Their signature style is animating original texts and music, and they have exhibited in a number of major art institutions around the world, including the Public Art Fund in New York City.

Reflecting on our unique position in the Pacific are Jon Jeet, a registered Ngāi Tahu carver of Maniapoto and Fijian Indian descent, and Pacific Sisters, a renowned collective of Pacific and Māori artists, fashion designers, musicians and performers. The 2022 Season will also include exciting artworks from two artists who have called Ōtautahi home at crucial points in their careers: Eddie Clemens and Scott Flanagan.

Adding unique voices to the line up are two women who have made New Zealand their home. Wendelien Bakker is from The Netherlands and Ōtautahi and is currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Dr Jo Burzynska is a UK-born and Lyttelton-based multimedia artist whose practice centres primarily around sound.

“We are delighted to return to our full programme of events after the past two Covid-disrupted years,” says Executive Director Deborah McCormick. “It’s the perfect reason to come in to the central city and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and some truly innovative and exciting works of art.”
