What’s on this weekend
Yes, that’s right. Things are on. This very weekend you can attend a West End musical, live Kiwi music concerts, go to the movies, or throw a cocktail party, all without leaving your bubble. Cityscape has your guide to making the most of this weekend’s entertainment offerings.
THEATRE
The Phantom of the Opera, Saturday April 18 to Sunday April 19
From Saturday 8am you can stream one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous musicals. Set up your own home theatre complete with a haunted Box 5 and dress up or down as you please - we’ll be trying out the bowtie and trackpants look to get in the mood.
The Show Must Go On! is streaming a different Lloyd Webber musical each week along with behind-the scenes footage. It’s all free, but if you want to contribute something, the channel has links to some recommended charitable organisations.
LIVE MUSIC
Better Living Festival, Friday April 17 & Saturday April 18 from 4.30pm
The idea of going to an actual music festival with heaving crowds, toilet queues and sweaty bodies might seem terrifying right now, but Melted Ice Cream is delivering an online live music extravaganza featuring 34 Kiwi artists.
The two-day festival kicks off on Friday afternoon and features musicians such as Lawrence Arabia and Marlon Williams streaming directly to your computer, mobile speaker, or smart TV.
DANCE
Synthony, Friday April 17 at 7.55pm
STAY HOME! Relive the Magic – 2019 Live! Auckland Recording
It’s a dance party like no other, and it’s in bedrooms and lounges everywhere. Synthony is a successful format in which the Auckland Symphony Orchestra performs high-energy dance music numbers in high-definition audio.
Crank the speakers with your bubble buddies or slip on your noise-cancelling headphones and get in the zone. Expect to hear some of the biggest dance tracks in the world redefined.

MOVIE
Bombshell
This is the story that started #metoo. Fox News America, the powerful TV network famous for its bombshell blonde presenters and explosive news coverage, got a bombshell of its own when one of its top women, Gretchen Carlson, publicly accused the chief executive of sexual harassment. This movie follows the internal wars, and the battle Fox’s women faced in making this man account for his many alleged crimes.
Bombshell is available now to stream in New Zealand on Google Play, Apple TV, and the Microsoft store. Check out the trailer here.
PARTY
In collaboration with No.4 Bar and Restaurant, Cityscape has an idea to get you and your friends gathered for some good times on Zoom: throw an online cocktail party featuring a recipe for delicious espresso martinis made using ingredients found in your home (no espresso machine needed!).
