Spring trend alert: Animal print nails
Kylie Jenner rocked leopard print French tips this year, and Hollywood went wild for it. Millie O'Grady at Shape of Elegance, a home-based nail salon in Parklands, is an expert on the trend. Cityscape caught up with her about creating purrr-fect prints.
How do you create the animal prints? All of my animal prints are painted by hand with gel polish, and sometimes include glitters and foils to add a little sparkle. The prints can be added to a gel polish manicure or gel extensions.
What occasions are people getting these prints for? For every day! You can choose softer colours for a more subtle look, or go bold and choose bright, contrasting colours to really make a statement.
How long do they last? Nail art will last as long as your gel manicure, which on average is about two to three weeks. Invest in a good cuticle oil and use it at least once a day to hydrate your nails and prevent brittleness.
What do you love about this style? Animal prints never get old! You can get creative and put your own twist on an original print by choosing different colours to give them a totally new look.
Should we come in with ideas, or can you create something from scratch? Most clients will come in with an idea, either a picture of a set they like or a pattern or print. If you have no idea, no worries! I have lots of examples you can look through to find something that catches your eye.
What’s your favourite nail art you’ve created? I love creating themed nails. Some of my favourites have been pink nails for breast cancer awareness, and race nails for a New Zealand triathlete competing in Australia.
How wild are people going with their nail art at the moment? Some people are going crazy with a full set of nail art which I love, while others like to play it safe with one or two feature nails.
Why is this so popular right now? Self care is huge, and a gel manicure is a great way to treat yourself to something you can enjoy it for several weeks. I always feel so good after a new set of nails. Nail art is also a really cool way of expressing yourself and making a statement. Also, who doesn't love a nail compliment?
What's your favourite print? My favourite animal print is really hard to choose! I think it would have to be leopard print followed closely by any reptile prints. I've also done a swatch of a poisonous frog print in a striking yellow and black which is a favourite of mine.
