Still one of the city’s favourite events after 35(!) years, Sparks is back (how could it not be?) this month, with the city expected to pour into Hagley Park to see and hear the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra do its stuff as part of the city’s SummerTimes festival.
Conductor Kenneth Young will lead the audience through a programme that features popular pieces of orchestral music that range from In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg to The Superman March by Williams, with the big occasion culminating with a literal bang(s) as a dazzling fireworks display erupts in time with Tchaikovsky’s immortal 1812 Overture at 9:30pm.
Pre-show entertainment kicks off at 5:30pm, with collectors on site for St John ensuring there’s a good cause to go with the good music.
